What is hypnosis?
- Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness when
the conscious, judgmental mind slows down and the unconscious mind
comes to the forefront. The unconscious mind is the "seat"
of your emotions and imagination. Under hypnosis, you can talk and use words and ideas to alter perceptions. A hypnotized person is
awake and aware of what is going on, in fact they are an active
participant in the hypnotic process.
How do I know if I am hypnotized?
- In most cases, you might not know. To
complicate matters there are many ebbs and flows to the hypnotic
process as you "float" from a lighter to a deeper state and
back. While experiencing hypnosis the surprise comes when you
realize that you are completely aware and in control. You have the
ability to accept or reject any suggestion. It is not uncommon for
stage participants to tell me at the end of the show that they weren’t
really "under". Even though, the person could not remember
their name on stage, they may still insist
that they were not hypnotized. It is simply that they expect to feel
something different. It simply feels like relaxation and awareness.
I
try very hard through a series of tests to help the person understand
that they were hypnotized.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
(What happens if the hypnotist dies or leaves the room?)
- It is not possible to "get stuck in
hypnosis". You are always completely aware and in control. You
are always able to end the hypnotic process. Falling asleep is not
uncommon and many folks practice self hypnosis before sleep each
night. Interestingly enough, I have given a stage participant the
suggestion under
hypnosis to sleep for "two minutes" and then wake up
feeling refreshed. The participant sleeps for just two minutes. I
can set a clock on this process and have done this on a stage. It is fascinating how the
unconscious mind understands and automatically computes time.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
- I believe that anyone of average or greater
intelligence can experience hypnosis. That isn’t to say that it will
work on everyone in every situation. I use a variety of different
techniques to help folks enter the trance state.
-
- I have found that once a person has
experienced even a light trance that they become more readily
hypnotizable in the next session. The person becomes more comfortable
with the hypnotist, the situation and more open to accepting my
suggestions. In the right situation, I believe that just about
anyone can experience hypnosis, even if it is just a light trance.
Is hypnosis real?
- Yes. It might not be what many people expect,
but it is a very real, very useful tool that people can use to help
them to come into greater understanding of their unconscious
processes. They become more at peace with themselves and have a very
real reduction in the stress of every day life. They become very
present and able to fully experience the world around them.
Can anyone learn to hypnotize?
- Yes, just about anyone can at least learn the
basics techniques to hypnotize someone. That does not necessarily make
it a good idea. Like all things in life, you need to take
responsibility for your actions and be properly trained.
Can you make someone do anything?
- No, hypnosis has nothing to do with one person
controlling another person. As a hypnotist I can help guide people
through a variety of experiences, but it is up to them to create their
perceptions. Under hypnosis, your morals and ethics remain intact. You
will not do anything in trance that is not morally or ethically
acceptable to you.
-
That’s why you never read about hypnotized zombies
robbing convenience stores or people doing other uncontrollable things
under hypnosis.
Can hypnosis make me lose weight or stop
smoking?
- Unfortunately no. Although hypnosis is a great
tool and is very powerful when used correctly, it is not a magic wand
that can cure everything. All to often people tell me to MAKE THEM
accomplish something, for instance, lose weight, stop smoking, stop
procrastinating. I don’t want to discourage you from using hypnosis,
because it can really help you to accomplish your goal. You need to be
ready, motivated, and willing to do the appropriate work to be
successful. You have to take responsibility for whatever problem you
may have. Hypnosis can be a key ingredient because it is a way to
powerfully focus your mind, but it doesn’t take the place of your
willingness to stick to a good
plan.
