Lack of sleep is a common reason for persons to seek hypnotherapy, and
this can be an excellent treatment protocol. However, there can be
underlying medical reasons for lack of sleep so it is necessary to see a
Medical Doctor and have a referral.
The unconscious mind is the "seat of
the imagination and the emotions". It does not judge and accepts all
images as true.
So, we have all had the experience of waking up from a bad dream and being
relieved that it is "just a dream". During sleep is the
mind reviews the events of life and if there is emotional conflict, the
unconscious mind will keep presenting those same images as if to say
"Do you want to look at me now?". It may be a
recurring dream. The most important function of the unconscious mind is to
protect the body so it keeps presenting these images to the conscious mind
and in so doing, wakes the person. In severe cases, we see Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder which can manifest itself as disturbed sleep
patterns.
Our emotions are attached to our memories
and a group of events surrounding an emotion is called a
"gestalt". I like to picture it as a "knotted rope",
with the knots representing the events. So if we are angry, we access
consciously all the anger from different memories. We pull on the rope.
The old adage of "having a clear
conscience and sleeping well at night" is right on track. My clients
are frequently surprised when they find out the unconscious reasons for
"not sleeping". It is necessary to learn what is needed from the
memory but release the attached emotion. The emotions that can get in the
way of sleep are anger, fear, guilt, shame and sadness. These can be
"reframed" successfully using hypnosis and a talented
hypnotherapist.
