- Neuro Linguistic Programming, NLP is the study
- of subjective events and how they affect our behavior. Subjective is the operative
word. My model of the world is by nature "subjective" which
makes it different from your model of the world. As the noted Carl
Jung observed in Man and his Symbols:
- Man.... never perceives anything fully or
comprehends anything
completely. He can see, hear, touch and taste: but how far he sees,
how far he hears, what his touch tells him, and what he tastes depends
on the number and quality of his senses..... No matter what
instruments he uses, at some point he reaches the edge of certainty
beyond which conscious knowledge cannot pass. (p.21)
- My model of the world is also constrained by the limits of my nervous
system and my brain deletes, distorts and generalizes all information,
just as yours does. Have you ever noticed how two different people might
describe the same event in totally different ways? It almost seems like
they are describing separate events. What does this mean? It means that
reality is our perception and our creation and is a neurological model
of reality.
The importance of this is that NLP interventions allow us to
interfere with your model of the world and set up new behavior choices.
Let us suppose, for instance that you are a nail biter and want to
stop this habit. I find through our discussions that the trigger for
nail biting is lifting your fingers to your face. You make a picture
of this scene and complete the picture with sounds, feelings and
anything else that may be happening. This is the old picture. I then
ask you to make a new picture of how you want your hands to look.
Maybe you envisage a manicure in a salon. We then replace the old
picture with the new picture. WOW....... and we keep doing this until
you are unable to remember the old picture. This technique is called
the "Swish technique" but you need a therapist, trained in
NLP techniques to help you with it.
This is just one example of
how we can eliminate "triggers" that elicit unwanted behaviors.
We use NLP techniques to set up new behaviors for unwanted habits,
including smoking and overeating.
We can also elicit the
triggers for procrastination, for instance and change this state into
motivation. How powerful would that be in your life?
I have learned that I
never need wake up, feeling that this is a bad day. I can start my day
over at anytime just by changing my model of reality and imagining
something totally different.
I also use the Parts
Therapy to talk with separate parts of your personality that are in
conflict and help them to come to resolution. Have you ever had the
experience of one part of your personality wanting one thing and another
part wanting another? This therapy allows the Parts to see that they are
originally part of a whole and for them to come back together to work for
your common good.
